A modern job description for family caregivers? “Whatever need to be done”

Defining the job of the 40 million family caregivers in America can be summed in one phrase: “Whatever needs to be done.”  According to a recent post from Health Affairs, despite efforts of policy makers to compartmentalize the myriad tasks facing family caregivers into basic Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs), family caregivers are still overwhelmed and confused by the process. The article from Health Affairs finds that many of these definitions are outdated, or built on false assumptions of what should be an “easy” task.  In a modern world, managing medications, care tasks, communication, and schedules becomes difficult, and caregivers need help to stay on track.
