According to consulting firm Gartner, the number of connected devices worldwide – 6.4 billion this year – will more than triple by 2020. The firm forecasts that nearly 21 billion objects, from light bulbs to cars, and HVAC systems to hospital devices, will be connected to the internet in the next four years.
